Beijing and Shanghai

A few photos from a week-long lecturing visit to China in July, 2013.
The visit started with a presentation at the NAFLE Conference in Beijing, and afterwards I was also able to visit the Summer Palace and the Forbidden City, accompanied by my two excellent guides Ding Elyse and Zhang Chao.
Then on to Shanghai to give a talk at the East China Normal University (ECNU), where my ex-PhD student Professor Zhen Xiao works, and to spend some time in the company of her and her husband Oliver and his mother, and their 10 year-old daughter Mimi, whom I last knew when she used to sleep peacefully in her pram during supervision meetings in my office at Lancaster in 2004!
I was also taken by the Chen family to visit the Oriental Pearl Tower, and thanks to the expert guidance of two of Dr Chen’s students, Sophie and Michael, to the Shanghai Museum, the Bund, the Xin Tian Di area, and the Jing An temple as well.
All in all, a great chance to take part in a very rewarding conference in Beijing and talk to staff and students at ECNU, have many stimulating conversations with several people about a wide range of topics, make a number of new and meet several old friends (from Wuhan days as well as earlier visits to Shanghai 15 or so years ago), see some magnificent sites and artefacts, and generally re-acquaint myself with the culture and people of this amazing part of the world. As they say, ‘it’s a tough job, but…’!
