At long last, after unremitting rainy weather, a clear weekend in the Lakes! Langdale Pikes was chosen for this first walk of the year, as in so many ways it epitomises the best of the Lake District. As Wainwright says: “Good stuff goes into little spaces... This is certainly true of the Langdale Pikes, for in a relatively small area they offer a wealth of interest and beauty.” The ascent was from the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, up the western side of Dungeon Ghyll, round Thorn Crag, and thence to Loft Crag, Pike o’ Stickle, Harrison Stickle and back down by the eastern side of Dungeon Ghyll. Distance: 3.76 miles/6.04 km; height: 2538 ft./774m.
