A Great Gable Round

To save time/energy, this walk went from Honister Pass (NT car park behind the YHA), straight up to Grey Knotts, thence along to Brandreth, Green Gable, Windy Gap, Great Gable itself, and then down to Beck Head and back to Honister Hause via “Moses’ Trod”. Unsurpassable views in all directions, especially towards Buttermere-Crummock Water and Ennerdale, but also down to Borrowdale, over to the Langdales, down into Styhead Pass and Wasdale. To my mind, the weather conditions (high broken clouds) are the best for views, as the constantly changing effects of light and dark provided by succeeding cloud shadows provides much greater interest than a completely clear blue sky (and, of course, a totally grey one!). (Distance: 6 miles/9.6 km., ascent: 2500 ft./760 m.) P.S: A very moving piece by Tony Greenbank, about this route up to Green Gable and the Great Gable memorial, is available here.
