A High Street Round

After completing this walk, I discovered that Wainwright says “the ascent is a classic” and is the “connoisseur’s route” up to High Street. Even without knowing this beforehand, I was very impressed! The starting point was Haweswater reservoir car park, then from The Rigg at the foot of Riggendale up the long ridge comprising Swine, Heron, Eagle and Rough Crags, Caspel Gate and Long Stile, and so to the summit. Descent was via Mardale Ill Bell, Nan Bield Pass and Small Water. Though the top remained cloudy, the snow and the changeable weather conditions lower down provided some dramatic views. Two very good alternative sets of photos of much of this walk are available at the Striding Edge and Andrew Leaney’s Lakeland Fells web-sites. (Distance: 6 miles, ascent: 2240 ft.)
