The Fairfield Horseshoe is yet another of those to be found in Paul Buttle’s “The 12 Best Walks in the Lake District” (cf. High Street and Scafell Pike above). Ascent was from Ambleside via High Sweden Bridge, Low Pike, High Pike, Dove and Hart Crags, and thence to the summit. Back down via Great Rigg, Heron Pike, Nab Scar, and through the grounds of Rydal Hall to Ambleside. Weather not of the best (click here for the same walk in much brighter conditions), but still some magnificent views most of the way round. Distance: 10.6 miles/17.1 km; height: 3424 ft./1044m.
