Great End

The route was from the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel in Great Langdale, along Mickleden, up to near Rossett Pike, then Angle Tarn, Esk Hause and so to the summit. Back down via same route as far as Angle Tarn, then over to Stake Pass for the sake of variety. The views from this peak to the north and east in particular are stunning, as well as down the gorges on its main faces, and the summit terrain is much easier to move around on than on Scafell Pike (or, for that matter, Scafell as well). Great Gable, the rest of the Scafell massif (including Lingmell), Allen Crags, Glaramara, Esk Pike, Bowfell, and so on - the feeling at this spot of being at the centre of such a magnificent range of fells - many of the grandest in all of Lakeland - is unsurpassable. Also, it is much quieter and not (quite!) so much effort to get to and back from as the main Scafell Pike summit. A true fell-connoisseur’s delight - highly recommended!
