Up alongside Dungeon Ghyll and thence to the summit, in very wintry weather. Back down via Stickle Tarn and by Stickle Ghyll. Very windy, snowy and icy from upper Dungeon Ghyll onwards, and, indeed, wind too strong on the summit to stand up. Marvellous atmosphere, however - the icy, bare and stony top, along with the heavy dark rolling clouds and, of course, the strong winds made it seem a perfect stage for a dramatic episode such as the Ride of the Valkyries in Wagner’s ‘Die Walküre’. Distance: 2.88 miles/4.64 km; height: 2199 ft./670m.
