Helm Crag Round

Helm Crag and Calf Crag form the south-eastern and north-western ends respectively of a fine ridge near Grasmere, bounded by Easedale to the south and Green Burn to the north. This walk started at Ghyll Foot, at the base of Helm Crag and bottom of Green Burn, and proceeded up the latter’s gentle slopes to Calf Crag, and from there back to Pike of Carrs, Gibson Knott and Helm Crag, descending down a “drop-off” round its eastern flank. The first part of the walk was solitary and gentle, and the second full of fine views east to the Helvellyn fells, down Easedale to Grasmere and west towards the tops of the Langdale and Coniston fells. (Distance: 5 miles, ascent: 1760 ft.)
